Welcome to Lane 3

Why, may you ask, am I starting a blog about my swim lane? Is it because I have so much free time on my hands? Au contraire, fellow swimmers. It is precisely because I do not have extra free time that I am doing this. I added up the amount of time that my lanemates and I spend emailing each other about all things our lane, and it was shocking, shocking - so much so that I needed to step in.

So who is lane 3? We are ten swimmers strong in our 30s, 40s, and - thanks to a recent birthday for one lanemate - 50s! Again, you may ask, how can ten people swim in one lane? Thankfully, it is rare that we all come to the same practice at the same time. The only time we gathered together is at our 2008 holiday party (see pics). In any case, we all swim with MIT Masters under the tutelage of our coach, Bill Paine. We represent a variety of disciplines: science, medical, financial, research, education, and marketing. Let me put it this way - if I am stranded on an island, I'd take this group in a heartbeat. Anyway, while we are a tight-knit group, we are welcoming to other swimmers who happen to wander into the lane now and then, and expect that our lane family will change in time (I know - horrible to think about but I am just being realistic!). We have good lane karma with each other and when occassional disagreements break out, we usually resolve them in a timely manner (sometimes an hour, sometimes weeks depending on the offender and offense).

There you have it. Lane 3.
